Binh Tay Market as built in 1920s by a Chinese businessman in the heart of Chinatown (back then was known as Cho Lon Province). After a few times of renovation and expansion, the total size of the market is 25,000 square meter (approx. 269,097 sq.ft) and has 12 entrance gates.
Since its opening in 1930, the market has been the central market in District 6 and one of the biggest local markets in Ho Chi Minh City.

Chợ Lớn Province (Chinese: 堤岸) was a former province in the South of Vietnam. It was established in 1899 by the Chinese community when a big province named Gia Dinh was split to four smaller provinces. The province was about 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) from Saigon.
In 1931, Chợ Lớn and the neighboring city of Saigon were merged to form a single city called Saigon–Cholon. The word “Cholon” was dropped from the city’s official name in 1956, after Vietnam gained independence from France in 1955.
