Former Chợ Lớn Province

Chợ Lớn Province (Chinese: 堤岸) was a former province in the South of Vietnam. It was established in 1899 by the Chinese community when a big province named Gia Dinh was split to four smaller provinces. The province was about 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) from Saigon.

In 1931, Chợ Lớn and the neighboring city of Saigon were merged to form a single city called Saigon–Cholon. The word “Cholon” was dropped from the city’s official name in 1956, after Vietnam gained independence from France in 1955.

Before Binh Tay Market was built, there is another market called “The old Cho Lon” (mean The Old Big Market)
